Season 2 Episode 2 - Roots & Revitalization

Greektown & Park Heights:  Music, food and a strong Greek cultural presence have defined Baltimore's Greektown neighborhood since the 1930s.  Although it has maintained a strong Greek population, the face of Greektown is changing to reflect a variety of other ethnicities and cultures.  This influx, as well as the presence of nearby Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center, challenges the community to maintain its cultural heritage while opening its doors to inevitable change.  Best known as the home of Pimlico Race track, Park Heights has struggled with a deteriorating housing stock and economic uncertainty.  However, its recent plans for a community renaissance have residents hopeful that a revitalized Park Heights will improve their lives and their children will face a brighter future in this community.

Then, Kate teams up with with BFM’s in-house Chef Charlotte Galley.  They’ll shop for seasonal ingredients, including some mouth watering mushrooms, fresh asparagus and creamy cheese.  They’ll talk about what’s in season and share some strategies for shopping within this wonderful, sprawling market.  They even have to time to hula hoop before heading back to Charlotte’s back yard to bake up some homemade pizza paired up with a fresh salad.

Ed Darwin, a former school teacher at Southern HS in Baltimore, captains his classic charter boat, the Becky D, for Kate and Chef Winston Blick from Clementine for a fun day at the bay.  Included are a fishing lesson from the pro and the perfect boat lunch.  After hauling in their catch, it's a quick stop for a few fresh local ingredients before Kate and Winston head to the kitchen to prepare a fabulous fish dinner.

Kate’s headed for one amazing adventure at the Baltimore Farmers’ Market and Bazaar, aka “The JFX” market.  After grabbing a great cup of joe from Zeke’s, it’s time to make the “donuts” - mini donuts that is with a 101 lesson from Mitch Salland.  He and his team crank out 100’s of donuts on the fly under the freeway every weekend with a fixings bar full of fun toppings. Then, Kate teams up with with BFM’s in-house Chef Charlotte Galley.  They’ll shop for seasonal ingredients, including some mouth watering mushrooms, fresh asparagus and creamy cheese.  They’ll talk about what’s in season and share some strategies for shopping within this wonderful, sprawling market.  They even have to time to hula hoop before heading back to Charlotte’s back yard to bake up some homemade pizza paired up with a fresh salad.
